Interesting spy drama

Based on "Operation Mincemeat" during World War II, this film is an excellent example of a spy movie that is interesting without being gimmicky or melodramatic. An excellent cast is headed by the redoubtable Clifton Webb.

The elaborate plot to trick Nazis by using a corpse masquerading as a dead Royal Marine officer is amazing in its detail. The film is all the more astonishing because it is based on the actual ruse to deceive the enemy into thinking that the invasion of Italy would take place in a location other than where it actually happened. A good film for espionage lovers.

needs to be seen in color

As usual, Joel McCrea is excellent in an underplayed role of dignity. The movie was filmed on magnificent locations surrounding Sedona, Arizona. Unfortunately I have only found black and white copies of this movie. To due the film justice it should be seen in color, which would greatly increase my rating for this movie.

Yikes!

This has got to be one of the most disappointing films of recent memory. And I just got finished watching License to Wed. The basic notion is intriguing enough: people live in a dystopic future but the "Man" keeps it hidden from them using computer chips implanted in their brains. Our hero is a stand-up, police-officer kind of guy who, for fairly unclear reasons, decides to join a rag-tag group of rebels (by group I mean one or two) dedicated to showing the world the truth. But this didn't even rise to the level of a Sci-Fi channel original movie, but was slightly better than that one zombie movie made by those kids in their trailer park one weekend... and Transmorphers. The acting was as good as could be expected, given the wooden dialogue, bad direction and snails-pace editing. No, that's not true. The acting was also pretty bad. The music sounded like something out of a mid-80's video game. This was more like someone's proof of concept of a movie than the actual movie itself. If I had a chip implanted in my brain I'd program it to make myself remember doing something slightly enjoyable for the last hour and a half of my life. Avoid at all costs.

And I'm not saying this for my health...

I'm new to New York and my girlfriend and I really enjoy doing "NYC things" every once in a while. So... we went to a Yankee game in September, the MET in October, the Thanksgiving Day Parade in November, ice skating at Rockefeller Center in December and a film festival last month. Every activity more fun than the next... However, I'm a movie kind of guy and really enjoyed the film festival the best. A movie called "You Tell Me" was the feature we enjoyed the most. I'm sure I missed some of the film because I was busy laughing over a lot of the dialogue. I remember thinking that this movie that I had never heard of is funnier than most of the big studio flicks they mass produce and make hundreds of millions of dollars out these days. My girlfriend and I also liked it because one of the characters in the film was just like a friend of ours, so weird. So, if you like romantic comedies, movies in general or just want to do a "NYC thing", go see "You Tell Me"... and I'm not saying this for my health.

Hard, Gritty and To the Point But Not In the Way You Expect

Che: Part One felt very complete and fulfilling. I found myself looking at Ernesto "Che" Guevara as a very well rounded person. Not as an ideological self fulfilling man but as an articulate man with thought out rational decisions as well as a man with many useful talents.

The acting of the cast all around was very good but Benicio Del Toro took the movie by storm but he did this in a very subtle way. His performance displayed how Che's spirit was able to superseded the hardships faced in the Cuban Revolution. It did not display any brutality or recklessness but a devotion to a cause. Del Toro's perforations was that worthy of an Oscar nomination but I don't think Che Guervara cared to much about awards.

The directing by Steven Soderbergh was visually stunning at times with much of the scenes shot in the forest. What kept the movie upbeat though were the scenes of Che in New York giving interviews and addressing the U.N. It added an extra layer to the film allowing you to see another side of Che. The side in which he shows his political and speaking abilities. The writing was very good with the dialog always keeping you engrossed. The music, though not much of it, was very good and stayed within rhythm of the rest of the film.

Overall the film succeeds in showing Che as a well rounded man never developing into oversimplified or unnecessarily complex portrayal of a man. The movie was very accurate and refused to take on a role of being inspiring or Hollywoodish which I enjoyed. The only problem with the film I had was that it seems to have a little too much of a feel of a war film rather than a biopic. Still I highly recommend this film.

Interesting observation of a declining trade

This is a series of vaguely connected episodes set in and around a geisha house. Staff come and go. There are money transactions between everybody. Naruse knows this area to perfection and uses this knowledge and some tremendous actresses to portray both interesting day to day details and some of the major issues. Linked themes are the ending both of careers and of businesses in the context of a decline in the popularity of geishas and their traditional entertainment skills in post war Japan. Even less than in other Naruse films, there is little depiction of the geisha with clients and more about their 'off stage' lives.

As ever, Naruse's camera-work and editing is tremendous in capturing scenes and actions.

Middle-drawer Fox musical...not a predictable place to find Ernest Borgnine!

Working-stiff family man Ray Henderson, a piano player who dabbles in songwriting, meets struggling composers Buddy De Sylva and Lew Brown in 1920s Atlantic City; their musical partnership, formed by chance, evolves into a successful team which reaches the heights of Broadway and Hollywood. Biography of colorful tunesmith-trio who had hits with Al Jolson's "Sonny Boy" and the novelty numbers "Button Up Your Overcoat" and "Sunny Side Up" is nearly run into the ground by meandering musical routines which simply are not up to previous 20th Century-Fox standards. The casting also seems off: as the mercurial Brown, it isn't long before Ernest Borgnine loses his proverbial temper, yet his transitions from angry brute to dancing maestro have no resonance (the character never takes shape); Sheree North is the songbird who seems bound by faith to the three guys, though it's obvious her singing and dancing isn't as special as it's meant to be. As peace-keeper Henderson, Dan Dailey looks a bit sheepish at times (particularly in the "Overcoat" number), though Gordon MacRae as the overtly-ambitious De Sylva is nicely attuned to this milieu (and, for once, MacRae's baritone isn't over-worked). The production is glossy but lacks pizazz, while the uncertain path post-Hollywood isn't used to give the story an arc, only to point us to the formulaic happy ending. ** from ****

Ordinary film portrait of an extraordinary man

Although Cornel Wilde gets top billing as an American double agent, the true star of this film is Major John Andre (Michael Wilding), the British officer who was captured as a spy and hanged for his plot with Benedict Arnold to betray West Point. Unfortunately the acting is wooden by almost everyone, so a good story and some interesting moral dilemmas are hard to hit home.

My one and only favorite American Revolution film is John Ford's classic "Drums Along the Mohawk" (1939). "The Crossing" (2000) runs a distant second. Most of the rest, like "The Devil's Disciple" (1959), "The Howards of Virginia" (1940), and "John Paul Jones" (1959) are merely OK and some, like The Patriot" (2000) and "Revolution" (1985) are just plain silly. The Disney "Ben and Me" (1953) is entertaining and historically accurate (forgetting the mouse). The TV mini-series "The Adams Chronicles" (1976). "The Revolution" (2006), and "John Adams" (2008) are probably one of the best sources about the period. If you like Pre Revolution 18th Century American history, Michael Mann's breath-taking "Last of the Mohicans" (1992) is a great film from this period, as is King Vidor's "Northwest Passage" (1940).

Quietly moving film

Strawberry Shortcakes tells the story of two pairs of women: Akiyo, an escort/prostitute, and Satoko, receptionist at Akiyo's escort agency. On the other hand we have Toko, a graphic artist who rents a room to office girl Chihiro.

The film looks at the idea of loneliness in the big city, where meaningful relationships are difficult. Akiyo wants to commit suicide because the man she loves isn't interested in her. Satoko dreams of being loved by anyone but her creepy boss. Toko tries to forget her former boyfriend by immersing herself in her work, and Chihiro hopes to marry a selfish loser.

As the film progresses the two pairs of women make friends: Akiyo and Satoko on the one hand, Toko and Chihiro on the other, and as the friendships develop the need to find love/marriage becomes less important.

Slow, deliberate and revealing, I found this film one of the most moving films I have seen in the last few years.

It is a little corny

Yes this movie is a little corny, but most of the sci-fi/horror movies of that time were corny, but still fun to watch. And this movie still has a good underlining story. The astronauts find themselves in another world from the one they left, their families and homes are gone and mutants attack them. Then they find another race like their own. And after fighting the mutants and the others they work together to start to rebuild the Earth. Corny but good.

novel variation on "Most Dangerous Game" from wr-dir Wyott Ordung

Best known for some classic "B" science fiction films of the 1950s such as MONSTER FROM THE OCEAN FLOOR, writer/producer/director Wyott Ordung attempted to work in the LA film noir/psychological drama vein with this 1956 rarity, taking the classic "Most Dangerous Game" scenario as a starting point, but reinventing it in a very novel way. I don't want to give too much plot away as the film unrolls in a surprising way. Chuck Connors, although best known for his Western roles and his fatherly manner on The Rifleman, plays over-the-top psycho roles well (see DEATH IN SMALL DOSES for proof!), and does so here, pitted against Korean War vet Don Ross (billed as "introducing"). It's an interesting psychological game of wits. Although many of the expository scenes are shot on a few small sets, much of the action takes place on the streets of 1950s Los Angeles, fascinating to look at and giving the film a wonderfully gritty and authentic feel. The film also has the ironic development of a Twilight Zone or Thriller episode, but further developed to feature length. This seems to be a unique entry in Mr. Ordung's filmography, and it shows that he can work well within the low-budget crime drama field with minimal resources because he can as a writer and director create tense situations and he had the good sense to hire actors such as Chuck Connors. Don Ross is fine too, although he is the down-to-earth one here and other than being tough and ingenious is not given the opportunities for histrionics that the script gives to Connors. Perhaps because Ordung is a "cult" name in Science Fiction circles, someone will do a video/dvd release of this little-known gem--I certainly hope so. It is due for re-evaluation. (It has a vague resemblance to CONFESSIONS OF A PSYCHO CAT, made ten years later...although that is probably coincidental. PSYCHO CAT was the first film I thought of while watching this)

Yee-ha!

Beverly Garland is the only reason I gave this a good rating. She acts very well and is very pleasing to watch.

Other than that, typical Roger Corman production. Lots of mediocre actors, lack of continuity, lots of women displaying themselves, making out, and humorous scenes when not meant to be humorous. I love Bev's stoic reaction in the beginning. Plus, the whiny barkeep guy was so kooky and annoying. He got his just desserts. Interesting situation: boy meets girl, boy was hired to kill girl, boy falls for girl, girl falls for boy, boy and girl get into shootout.

We do have fun.

Near miss

Iron Ridge is a very low budget effort that doesn't quite merit a truly negative review, but neither is it a quality film. The story essentially involves a hunter lost in the mountains attempting to survive, and the mountain rescue worker attempting to find him before it's too late.

I'll start with what doesn't work in Iron Ridge, the lead actors are not seasoned thespians so performances are spotty. The actor playing the part of lead rescuer is not up to the challenge of handling the role. That is, he does not have a relaxed manner in front of the camera, and seeing how his character is vital to the story it only hurts the film. Iron Ridge also fails to make better use of it's outdoor locations, there are one or two moments but overall cinematography is somewhat standard fare.

Here's what I did like about the film, the two men who play the hunters do a decent job performance wise and they physically look the part of young outdoors-men. The story of being lost in the wilderness and trying to survive is one I never tire of seeing, and this aspect is central to the film. Finally, though the DVD synopsis and cover art is somewhat misleading in that a grizzly does not play a major part in this story of survival, what very little screen time the bear has is worthwhile. Having collected feature films that feature grizzly bear in the storyline (odd I know) I've seen several grizzly thespians and Brutus the Bear is certainly a great example of the species, and has terrific screen presence.

This is a project I wish writer/director/actor Stu Brumbaugh had a larger budget with which to work, this may have corrected some of my complaints about the film. While I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to those who enjoy outdoor adventure films and there isn't any truly objectionable material for family viewing, it does fall just short of being a better adventure film.
