The future. The corrupt regime broadcasts the illusion of a beautiful city to the chip in your head, when in fact the city is in ruins. The rebels know the truth and seek to foment revolution.

Yikes!

This has got to be one of the most disappointing films of recent memory. And I just got finished watching License to Wed. The basic notion is intriguing enough: people live in a dystopic future but the "Man" keeps it hidden from them using computer chips implanted in their brains. Our hero is a stand-up, police-officer kind of guy who, for fairly unclear reasons, decides to join a rag-tag group of rebels (by group I mean one or two) dedicated to showing the world the truth. But this didn't even rise to the level of a Sci-Fi channel original movie, but was slightly better than that one zombie movie made by those kids in their trailer park one weekend... and Transmorphers. The acting was as good as could be expected, given the wooden dialogue, bad direction and snails-pace editing. No, that's not true. The acting was also pretty bad. The music sounded like something out of a mid-80's video game. This was more like someone's proof of concept of a movie than the actual movie itself. If I had a chip implanted in my brain I'd program it to make myself remember doing something slightly enjoyable for the last hour and a half of my life. Avoid at all costs.

Eric feels that he can't be openly gay as an ex-hockey player or as a public figure still associated with professional hockey. Eric and Sam's life is turned upside down when they take temporary custody of Scot Latour, whose drug addict mother, Julie, recently passed away from a drug overdose. Julie assigned custody of Scot to her ex-boyfriend, Billy, who is Sam's deadbeat brother. Pleasant surprise!

I just saw Breakfast With Scot last night at the Seattle Intl. Film Festival. I was fully prepared not to like it at all, as most gay themed films of the last several years have been so disappointing.

Yes, it is a little predictable, in the sense that you ultimately know how a story like this is going to turn out. Novelty for the sake of novelty doesn't help stories either, and this is a solid well told story. The small turns of the story were not predictable though. I particularly liked that this Canadian production did not reach for the obvious over the top emotional climax an American production would have. For example, it resolves Tom Cavanaugh's work conflict with far less drama then I would expect from a gay themed film. The script deflates the situation in an interesting and realistic way, recognizing that the film is foremost about the relationship between Eric and Scot, and not about Eric's closeted work situation.

The acting is really really solid. The cast feels like an ensemble, not a group of actors vying for screen attention. It takes awhile to realize that Tom Cavanaugh, with his usual non-showy performance, is the adult lead. Noah Bernett, as Scot, hits it exactly right. A very tough character for an actor of any age to get right. Some criticize the script, saying that the character is way too flamboyant for a boy this age. But that is exactly the center of the book, and the film, for this character to be so unapologetically out there and flamboyant that he challenges gays even more than straights. He's not supposed to be a typical gay kid. (In fact, part of that challenge is that he (and we) do not even know for sure what his ultimate sexuality might be.) As it is, he is sort of a child genius of fun fashion and cosmetics. His character is supposed to make us uncomfortable, and challenging to our assumptions.

Cinematography and production design are first rate. I heard that the overall budget was well under 4 million, if so, then bravo to the production crew, it looks like more.

Casablanca, 2003. 14 young hard-rockers are arrested and condemned for sentences from 3 months to 1 year. What are the accusations? Satanism and shaking the foundations of Islam. Based on actual events.

Watch Les anges de Satan Trailer :

Review :

Finally, a film about metal which is not a documentary.

Heavy metal and its supporters throughout history, as well as the present, have shown that apart from creating great music, heavy metal is mostly all about controversy, pushing the boundaries of the "norm" and fighting for what you believe in. Most of us should be familiar with the cases of metal bands having the trouble of putting up with accusations of Satanism: Black Sabbath, Black Widow, Iron Maiden, most Norwegian black metal bands (even if some of them really are…), Rotting Christ and, most recently, Behemoth; all had trouble with playing concerts because of such accusations. (The list could go on…and on.) Ahmed Boulane's film The Satanic Angels portrays exactly this, however, in a more extreme case.

The film is set in Casablanca, Morocco where the very young members of two bands, Apocalypse Now and To Be Free, are kidnapped by the police and imprisoned. Not only the band members but also people related to the band in any way; for example, the Egyptian owner of a coffee place where the band and friends hang out. And for what reason are all these people imprisoned (without bail), tortured and put on trial? Because of all the brainless stereotypes surrounding metal: worshipping Satan, eating cats, doing drugs and… singing about Palestine (?!). According to the authorities in the film, these people have "shaken the foundations of Islam" just because they play the music they love and wear black T-shirts.

This film makes you wonder how easy it is for us here in the West. We've heard of the stories of bands like Iron Maiden being dubbed Satanists just because they write songs with the Devil in the lyrics (in this case: Maiden's The Number of the Beast album). Sam Dunn's documentary Global Metal has portrayed heavy metal fans in Islamic countries having the difficulty of expressing themselves freely. Apart from Global Metal, I haven't experienced visually what The Satanic Angels has to offer. With Boulane's film we're taken into the core of the action… the brutal slaughter of human rights. In contrast to the events mentioned above The Satanic Angels actually presents the consequences of being "different" in a conservative country and, thus, a huge difference to the consequence of accusations of Satanism in the West – which usually is not being able to play gigs or releasing albums (very rare nowadays!). Although it portrays how the system is corrupt and dominated by Islamist fanatics, it is also a (true) story of how public opinion can alter the government's actions – the young men are found innocent after persistent action taken by the band members' relatives and close friends.

Apart from certain cheesy lines such as "We're artists. We'll never be understood.", the performance of the cast is exceptionally well acted. The director uses interesting camera angles, such as during the court scene when we see a skull underneath the judge's desk. Additionally, the way the politicians are shown observing a demonstration (held against the imprisonment of the young people), it gives a feeling as if they came out of their caves… The biggest downside for me, however, would be the rather simplistic choice of music for the soundtrack.

Political and socio political questions can also be picked up from the film. Why is it okay for Chinese people to eat cats and dogs but not okay for Muslims? Why are no women imprisoned and tortured? Why does the police want to avoid an international case by sending back the two foreign girls? (The latter has a more obvious answer, I believe.) All in all, The Satanic Angels is a great watch and is recommended to everyone in the metal community but also anyone interested in the violation of human rights. May I also say: Finally, a film about metal which is not a documentary!!! The band(s) acting in this film is a disbanded Moroccan black metal act Tormentor of Souls.

Get Cutie

At one point Kate (Ying Qu) pours boiling tea over her armpit to make the itch from the injection pricks go away. What an ugly way to burn. But that's about the most shocking scene in an otherwise utterly boring movie. Like the world it's set in, "Magazine Gap Road" is all shiny surface and no substance (if you don't count the kind of substance you need a needle for). Writer-director Nicolas Chin is trying very hard to make his feature debut into a Hong Kong spin on David Lynch, but it ends up looking like a random lipstick commercial thanks to lots of polished pictures, mellow music, and empty phrases. For a long time, you have no idea what's going on, but the sad news is you don't care. Admittedly, the movie is technically well-made and Jessey Meng (who plays Samantha, an ex-escort who has escaped the Tokyo call-girl circuit) is a real looker, as is her co-star Ying Qu, the fallen angel. Carl Ng (who didn't look so bad opposite Asia Argento in "Boarding Gate") is ridiculous as a smug millionaire.

Sweet children's film

Also known as "Where Is Winky's Horse?" this sequel to "Het Paard van Sinterklaas" follows up on the story of the first film. Winky is allowed to groom the horse of Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas, who celebrates his birthday on December 5th by giving children presents, more or less known as Santa Claus in other countries). She does it with a lot of love and is quite happy with the task. When her parents tell her she'll be getting horse riding lessons for her next birthday she's thrilled and assuming it'll be on that specific horse. As events roll by the title of the film is explained - the horse disappears and trouble arises.

As a typical children's film about moral, good and bad, confessing mistakes and such this one is not a film to bring many surprised looks on the faces of the audience. Kids that liked the first one will like this sequel, and parents that get dragged along will not be completely bored for it is actually worked out pretty well. The acting of the kid that plays Winky is done well enough to make the character feel completely believable and the other events happening are in place far enough to be accepted too.

The overall sequence of the film feels much like the old style Disney films where things start good, get bad and end good, but that isn't bad. It feels good and works well on the targeted audience - kids in the age group of 4 to 8 years.

Nice enough, 7 out of 10 horses groomed

Great Comedy

A beautiful love comedy, with fantastic actors, (check Javier Gutierrez, amazing) with the football world very at the back, providing a fantastic set for a gigantic and hilarious end. The love story between Willy Toledo and Natalie Poza is sweet and funny. Wonderfully directed, with a great camera work, fantastic locations, specially Granada at night. The director, Alvaro Fdez. Armero, who gave us the great "Todo Es Mentira", and "Nada en la Nevera", where the world discovered Maria Esteve, knows exactly how to combine comedy, love and sweetness with great wisdom, and the result is one of the best Spanish comedies in the last ten years. Wonderfully written by the director himself and Juan Cavestany ("Gente De Mala Calidad", another fantastic movie), it is an absolute must see.

The Blueberry War is an underdog story about some underprivileged berry pickers getting cheated off their money, taking justice into their own hands. Two young Polish guys take the initiative to take the berries back and under their run away trough the rural Sweden they meet a country that is much different from the official picture. This is a story on two levels. On the upper level there is illegal hunting, intrigues and political dribbling with stocks, fake deal and plans how to get the fingers on a 5 million Euro subsidy. On the lower level in the story, we have the berry pickers who, allied with some of the locals, start the quest of finding both the treasure, the kingdom and getting a delightful revenge. Brace for Another Sequel Collision

Sheer loyalty and affection for the Twins has brought us to this one. Not only do the two lovelies represent the beloved Xbox 360 in Asia, they've also grown quite a bit since the early 2000's, when they were unbelievably annoying in fare like Summer Breeze of Love.

Intervening years have seen them partake in more involved projects and become deeper rooted in "serious" acting, to wit Charlene's recent Diary and Gillian's role in 49 Days. Well, maybe this has worked better for A-Sa (Charlene to the uninitiated), but you get our drift.

Rejoice, then, for all that progress has now been swiftly given a kick in the boot and almost sent packing with Twins Mission, third entrance in the eponymous Twins cinematic franchise, and one that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the previous two.

While the first Twins Effect was a capable film, starring favorite sons Ekin Cheng, Edison Chen and Anthony Wong, this new release has hardly any meaningful highlights to recommend it. Stroywise, you get the same old tricks and excuses to send the dashing heroines by way of all kinds of menacing baddies and hazardous situations, with little else going on.

This flies in the face of the talent deposited within. Aside from the maturing Twins themselves, who are not as irritating as their younger selves from six years ago but hazardously close, Mission has Sammo Hung with his cigar-munching habits, a fact that has long-standing martial arts fanatics cheer as he enters the stage. However, even mighty Sammo can only do so much, and he's been in a couple of duds over the last few years. Here he's just as affable as ever, albeit in too limited a capacity to affect salvation.

Similarly, Wu Jing brings his usual subdued charm and kick-ass gong fu prowess to the fore, and may every action star be like him. But potent he may be, one thing he's not is a superman. There's no helping a run of the mill movie even with all the skilled fighting in the world.

Another unexpected boon are bona fide twins Mona and Lisa Ch'ng, brash and alluring as a pair of evil lookalikes who attack the goody two shoes titular Twins (who, of course, look nothing like each other) at every possible Guangdong turn. Yes, Twins Mission doesn't even have actual Hong Kong locales as best we could tell, pulling an X Files by relocating production across the border to cheaper environs.

But since the technical aspects of this motion picture are at least acceptable, and the martial arts choreography quite impressive, one has to surmise it's the screenplay that took the greatest budget hit, since Twins Mission has a most minimal story.

A gang of scheming, hostile twins (including the super sexy Mona and Lisa- check them out!) holds up a train carrying a mysterious Tibetan artifact, which then accidentally makes its way to Hong Kong (most likely de facto Shenzhen).

This is where our intrepid non-biological Twins join the adventure, aiding and abetting Lau Hey (Wu Jing) and Lucky (Sammo) as they fight to get the magical object back to prevent some unexplained calamity. The artifact has great healing powers and is thus coveted by many, including greedy developers and an innocent, H2-driving beauty (Jess Zhang) who needs it for her way-too-young sister.

Yuen Wah makes repeated appearances as both the main villain and the Twins' mentor and Principal. There's a bit of going on about how some twins go down the good path while others become twisted (like Mona and Lisa, don't forget), and in the end almost every character seems to have some doppleganger or other, but none of this makes the slightest bit of difference. As don't a few enjoyable comic relief moments featuring surprising ethnic diversity and an amusing Steven Cheung. Even in its comedy, Twins Missions come out short.

You can go into this affair expecting an action bonanza and emerge disappointed, for in spite of a few good sequences, it isn't all that. You could also sit back and behold the pretty young women on screen and come out satisfied, but then again that's not saying much for longevity.

We're just hoping to get more servings of Mona and Lisa soon, that's the bottom line here.

Great movie!

Hey just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this movie! It really was fantastic. Amazing performances from the actors, great music and story telling. I had this concept in my head of making a movie with the music telling the story through lyrics for sometime. Thanks for making it for me!

In this film, practically devoid of dialog, it's the lyrics of the Cumbia and Vallenato, that tell this original story. With a very simple plot and a local context it reaches a very interesting universal quality. It combines a critical, sincere and uninhibited vision with the playful spirit of a popular and youth oriented cinema that produces cult objects as seen in movies such as Zoot Suit (Luis Valdez, 1981) - which portrays the "pachuco" subculture through Swing and Jitterbug-, or Breakdance (Joel Silberg, 1984) - with Breakdance music and dance.

Cumbia Callera (aka Cumbia Connection) does the same but now for the "colombiano" subculture of northern Mexico.

Highly recommendable for those looking for something different new and entertaining.

The standard for Japanese films

Other than SABU films, I haven't really liked any Japanese dark comedies, and I generally dislike any films with cult movie qualities... This one is a huge exception.

Funuke Domo... is the story of a countryside family struggle. The movie begins with both parents dying in a car accident. The elder sister (Satou Eriko) comes back home from Tokyo because they are no longer able to send her money for acting school. The other 2 members of the family are the little sister (Satsukawa Aimi), an asthma-stricken aspiring manga writer and older brother (Nagase Masatoshi), who abuses his wife (Nagasaku Hiromi). Now that the frustrated elder sister came back (and eager to leave again though have no money), tension within the family hits an all-time-high. Every member of the family has a dark secret and it leads to one event after another...

This movie is unbelievably well-casted. I have seen Satou Eriko in couple of dorama series before, but she had never been my type of gravure idol. This movie totally converted me. She is just so HOT and fit perfectly into that demonic personality. Her chemistry with Satsukawa Aiko was really good, and there were quite a few interesting interactions between the sisters. I have also seen Satsukawa in a few dorama series before, but she had previously failed to leave any impact on me. Her performance in this film was solid, excellent portrayal of a seemingly innocent but dark-minded girl. Nagase Masatoshi, the only experienced actor of the three, gives the most impressive performance in this movie. His character was concerned and frustrated the whole time, and his subtle acting enabled me to really sympathize with him. Nagasaku Hiromi was recognized with many awards for her supporting role in this film, and she was very funny and expressed her character's feeling exceptionally well. Her acting felt very natural and sincere. Casting was really well-done, but not only that, the director was able to draw out the best out of every one of them. This film is pretty fast-paced, but it still feels like a true Japanese film with excellent mix of wacky and dark humor with subtlety. The country landscape is very beautiful and calming, and there were some pretty advanced camera work that were really impactful.

An exciting movie that explores family conflict. It's a movie that made me think "This is what a great Japanese film is supposed to be like." One of my favorite Japanese movies of 2007.

Suitably rock 'n' roll

A biographical film about the legendary Finnish rock band Hurriganes and especially about its founding father Remu Aaltonen. The film focuses on the childhood and teenage years of Remu before exploring the early years of the band before it really hit on. I think it was a good choice to do it like that, because it allows us to know Remu's character better and to follow the key points in his life. And it's a decent enough story. I personally didn't know much about Remu's past before this film, and I'm not really sure how much of it was romanticized for the movie, but I liked the story I was given here. There was drama, low points and high points, there were struggles and personal victories, the whole nine yards.

Eero Milonoff does a good job as the leading man himself. He's cocky and abrasive, like a proper "rokkikukko" (rock rooster would be the direct translation) should be, but when the character has to suffer and show his vulnerability, the man has enough depth and acting skill to really pull it off. The rest of the actors are for the most part just okay, though Tommi Korpela is always a memorable performer, no matter what the role.

I'd say the music was the other highlight of the film. You can feel the energy, the vibes and the excitement of their rock and roll, their happiness to be playing in front of a live audience. When a fan walks up to Remu and claims that "they're the best live band in Finland", you get what he's talking about.

I liked this film. I wouldn't go as far as to call it great, but any fan of Hurriganes should give it a watch, because they're going to enjoy it. And I'd claim that any fan of musical biographies in general will find some good things in it.

Review :

A treat for Madsen fans, and amusing for everyone else.

I was lucky enough to see the world premiere of this mockumentary at the Raindance Film Festival in London, with the titular Coolest Man on the Planet in attendance. A light satire on the paparazzi, entertainment industry and the self-righteousness of documentary film makers, this low-budget indie comedy is good for a few laughs.

Michael Madsen, playing himself, has been accused of killing an extra on one of his films by a slimeball paparazzo, Billy Dant (Jason Alan Smith). He sues Dant for slander, but when he loses, decides to teach him a lesson by sending a documentary film crew to stalk him and give him a taste of his own medicine. The plot reveals itself mostly through talking head interviews, and it takes a while for the film to warm up and for it to become clear what is going on. Once it gets going, though, it is quite funny and compelling.

Davis Mikaels, Kathy Searle and Doug Tompos are great as the film crew, each in the business for very different reasons, and all ringing true to life. The real draws, however, are the cameo talking heads by friends of Madsen, like David Carradine, Harry Dean Stanton, Daryl Hannah and his sister, Virginia Madsen, all making fun of themselves.

The film reminded me in places of a Christopher Guest one, and I certainly enjoyed it as much as For Your Consideration, which is on a similar subject (although also the least good of Guest's films). For something that only took ten days to shoot, the film makers have done an amazing job. Unfortunately, it perhaps still doesn't add up to enough for a cinema release. Being Michael Madsen should find its home on DVD or on something like HBO, where it will give fans of Mr. Madsen a treat, and everyone else a diverting hour and a half or so.

But of course a secret location isn't just a good place for an orchard -- it's a good place for a murder.

When I was doing some preliminary looking into this film (sometimes I like to get a feel for things), I found director Brent Nowak was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin -- twenty minutes from here and where I went to college. So, I was already feeling a bit better about what I was to see. And Brent, you didn't let me down. You can move to California, but you have Green Bay in side of you.

The filming itself was very professional -- this wasn't just some kids with a video camera, but cinema-quality film. Things were dark and at times a little blurry. This may have been due to the transfer, and might be gone when the distributor makes new prints. I noticed the online trailers seemed better lit. The DVD had more of a 1970s feel, which isn't all bad. But yes, everything was framed well, angled well, lit well (other than the overall darkness)... Nowak comes off as a seasoned film-maker and shouldn't be making independent films like this when he could be doing big budget features. (This is at least as good as the quality of the films in the After Dark horror festival, if not better.) I also need to give some major credit to the person in charge of the music. Very well done. I felt there was constantly a mood or atmosphere appropriate for the unknown situations. Even the rap and country music was excellent (I'm not a rap or country fan, but felt the rap over the credits was a great choice). One song, an acoustic guitar with a simple riff, was overused a bit around the halfway point, but I don't think most people really pay as much attention to the music as I do and won't notice.

The plot was good, which is crucial these days (I can only take so many of the same horror themes). The introduction with the old man was enough to keep my focus for the rest of the film even if it went sour (but it didn't). The apple theme is new (touched on a bit in "Behind the Mask", but not to this extent) and I found the "secret location" but believable, even in today's modern world. One big problem all horror films need to address is: how do we get rid of cell phones, and this film found a very acceptable way (and land lines, too).

Lots of the other little touches were nice. The news clippings were good -- I always think this adds more depth to any film. The wolf theme was also nice -- with a title like "Harvest Moon" and the talk of people ravaged by wolves, I was waiting for there to be a werewolf twist. Don't worry, there is a twist regarding the story of the wolf ravagings (but I won't reveal it here).

The script was stellar in the dialogue department. A shower scene contains a line that really lets us know the writer knew how we were going to interpret the scene (turning a "derivative" scene into an "homage" scene). Some of the swearing is new, which is hard to do with words we hear a dozen times in every film. The "if you want to live, come with me" was just subtle enough to almost escape me... and the best threat I've ever heard appears here: "I'm going to stick my hand straight up your (nether region) and pull out your intestines!" Priceless.

Horror fans who want blood, gore and nudity? Well, it's not buckets of bloods and scores of breasts, but you get a little of each -- don't worry! I actually didn't expect any nudity and almost did a double take. The blood I think could and should have been stepped up, with far too much of it happening just off the screen. I understand this saves a lot of trouble with visual effects and it's easier to leave it to imagination than have convincing gore. But I would have liked an attempt.

This could be the one independent film of 2007 you should see. (It's already the end of July, and this definitely outranks most of the independent films I've seen.) We have plot, we have acting of a Hollywood caliber. We have decent directing and a solid script. Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner! I do hope this makes the festival circuit and gets the proper distribution -- I want to see these film-makers in the big time within five years at most.

Review :

Surprisingly 'fidèle'

Towards Zero is not one of Agatha Christie's more famous novels, but for a murder mystery lover it is almost an essential read. It has been several years since I read it, but I very distinctly remember how much I enjoyed it as well as the plot and the substantial twist.

This French movie adaptation is set in present day Bretagne, but other than that remains - rather surprisingly - true to the book, more so than, for example, the Diana Rigg version of Evil Under The Sun. All important plot points remain intact. Not that this in itself signifies a great movie. Au contraire, vraiment - while the cinematography, setting, music and pacing are more or less good, many of the actors overact their characters to the point of becoming caricatures instead. The shrewish wife or the maid (vaguely reminiscent of Nancy Walker's Yetta in Murder By Death, nevertheless wholly unsuitable for a serious murder mystery) are best examples of this. Danielle Darrieux is, quite unsurprisingly, not among those, and her much too brief appearance as Aunt Camilla is the only real performance in the picture. François Morel as the detective comes close to one, but not quite close enough.

Final verdict: Entertaining murder mystery with some hammy performances, fast pacing and a great twist by Dame Agatha herself. Also useful as a French listening comprehension practice, especially if you're as lucky as I am and your copy lacks subtitles.
