News agent solves murder ahead of the police
Within the set of all such 1 hour or so British crime stories, "Behind the Headlines" is average (a 6.0). I found it zippy and entertaining. The lead, Paul Carpenter, gave us a gregarious and dapper character who will cut some corners to get a scoop that he can sell to other newspapers. He's interested in two ladies, Adrienne Corri and Hazel Court, both of whom are quite vivacious. His juggling of his female interests adds zest to his investigation of the murder of a blonde blackmailer that opens the picture. The opening is very well photographed in noir style.
Most memorable in the film is the script, which has Carpenter keeping the police in the dark while he markets a scoop and putting off Corri when Court reappears. The ladies are equally calculating.
