Delightful Dramatic Comedy Influenced by the Italian Neo-Realism

In the periphery of São Paulo, in a neighborhood of Italian immigrants and on the day of his wedding with Angela (Myriam Pérsia), the groom worker Zeca (Gianfrancesco Guarnieri) is trying to raise money for the wedding party. He needs to pay the tailor to get his suit; the photographer and the florist to have the wedding pictures; to buy the beverage for the party; he needs some money for the honeymoon. He does not tell the financial problem to his fiancée, and he spends his savings, sells his precious bicycle, and borrows money, trying to resolve the situation. The stressful day has a beautiful conclusion.

"O Grande Momento" is a delightful dramatic comedy influenced by the Italian Neo-Realism. The wonderful cinematography is full of details with memorable scenes, like for example, the sequence when Zeca rides his bicycle for the last time. The performances are wonderful, and this theme apparently was used by Mario Monicelli in his "Renzo & Luciana" segment in "Boccaccio '70". In times when Mira Nair's "Monsoon Wedding", or Joel Zwick's "My Big Fat Wedding", or Vanessa Parise's "Kiss the Bride" are successful and popular, it is refreshing and good to see this different approach of a troubled wedding day in the Brazilian lower class of the 50's . My vote is nine.

The fifties were a great time for the French thriller;those years saw Decoin's "La Verite Sur Bebe Donge" ,Allégret's "Manèges" ,Salavsky's "Les Louves" ,Delannoy's unfairly overlooked "Obsession" ,and to top all of them HG Clouzot's IMDb top 250 "Diaboliques".And Duvivier's masterful "Voici le Temps Des Assassins"

Claude Boissol's effort in not in the same league ,by a long shot.Whatever the director tried in his short-lived career ,he failed : comedy (the crude "Julie La Rousse" )historical drama (Napoleon II L'Aiglon probably his best though it does not mean much).According to historian Jean Tulard ,his most interesting work is "La Peau de l'Ours " which featured an unexpected twist as far the murderer was concerned.

With first-class thespians such as Daniele Delorme (who had just made "Voici Le Temps des Assassins " her finest performance ) ,Jean Marais ,Françoise Fabian and Denise Gence ,De La Comédie Française ,how could a director be wrong?It must be said in his defense that the screenplay is rather weak,some kind of a poor man's Boileau -Narcejac -who wrote "Diaboliques " and "Vertigo" -;based on a Luisa Maria Linares novel which fluctuates between film noir (life assurance,a dead who may not be dead,two wives ,one of whom might slowly go nuts,exhumation) and Harlequin Romance story (the affair between Delorme and Marais).

Most of the time the dialog does not ring true,it's even sometimes unintentionally funny ,and the actors seem left to their own devices .Even them cannot save the film from triteness.

Another one for Gerard Philipe fans only. Contains spoilers.

This is a boring, clichéd film about a drunken, drug-addicted artist and several women with whom he was involved during the last year of his life in Paris.

I'd seen this all before. The artist and his mistress live in a garret with a charming view of Nice out of their windows. But they are starving and must depend on the kindness of friends for their food or on the little money the wife can make painting postcards. The artist is tormented by his own failings--here primarily alcohol, though a reference is made to opium use--and his failure to sell his paintings to a public who doesn't understand his work. The artist is involved with several women, all of whom he treats badly, and with greedy art dealers who treat him badly.

The artist here is Modigliani, who is a physically sick man throughout the film. There is any number of scenes in which Gérard Philipe's face is sweating with the very exertion of staying alive. Yet the film never offers any background on how Modigliani came to this point or background on any of the characters or situations in this film.

And what, exactly, was Modigliani's relationship to the three women he's shown with? Bèatrice Hastings appears to be a wealthy woman who supplies Modigliani with opium and liquor. He physically abuses her, which she treats lightly, which doesn't go down very well today.

Rosalie owns a restaurant and bar where Modigliani tries to con drinks based on his charm and Rosalie's lingering affection for him.

And then there is Jeanne Hébuterne, whom the subtitles of the video identified as his wife. Apparently, in reality, she was just his mistress. As shown here, Jeanne was the sweet, virginal daughter of an upper-class family; her father strongly disapproved of her connection with Modigliani and locked her in her room to prevent her leaving their house to live with him. Then a few scenes later, Jeanne is free of her parents and meeting Modigliani in Nice. What happened in the interval? Some scenes edited out? The best scene in the film, the one point where the film comes alive, shows Modigliani, Jeanne, and his friend Léopold Sborowsky in the hotel suite of Mr. Dickson, an American industrialist who is interested to purchase some of his paintings. But Mrs. Dickson has no interest in her husband's deal, only in getting him packed and out of the hotel in time to meet the boat train. Finally, she bustles Dickson out before he can make a purchase.

A touching scene shows a sickly Modigliani moving about the terrace of La Coupole trying to sell for five francs his drawings to the uninterested patrons. But this sort of scene is one we've seen in other films about starving artists.

Gérard Philipe certainly had the handsomeness to play the doomed romantic hero and conveyed well the sick Modigliani here. But I've concluded that Gérard Philipe appeared mostly in mediocre films during his brief career.

Both Anouk Aimée (Jeanne) and Lili Palmer (Bèatrice) are wasted in this film. Lila Kedrova has a small role as Mme. Sborowsky.

But Lino Ventura most impressed me as Morel, the greedy, dastardly art deal. Marcel hovers over Modigliani like the angel of death, waiting for Modigliani to die for he knows that as soon as Modigliani is dead, his paintings will be worth something.

This film has a troubled history, which may account for the poor final product. The film began as a Max Ophuls production. But when Ophuls died, he was still working on the film's script with Jenri Jeanson. According to Konstantin Bazarov's article on Becker in World Film Directors, Volume 1, "When Jacques Becker took over, he rewrote the script completely, provoking a violent quarrel with Jeanson." Modigliani's daughter also exerted her influence on the film. In a review in the May 1958 issue of Cahiers du Cinéma, Jean-Luc Godard defended "Montparnasse '19" as a film about the fear of making a film. I found the review--filled with double talk--as boring as most of Godard's films. Truffaut has an entire chapter on Becker in The Films of My Life in which he mentions "Montparnasse '19" intermittently.

But the film must stand on its own; and it fails when it does that. It is a depressing film presenting a clichéd portrait of a dying artist in a story without narrative thrust and two-dimensional characters who never involve viewers. It's hard for me to believe that this film came from the same director who made the brilliant "Casque d'Or" and "Touchez Pas au Grisbi." Recommended to die-hard Philipe fans only.

Unique Stalinist Fantasy with heart and morale

Starik Khottabych is classic Soviet film, which screenplay is based on a bestseller, Lazar Lagin's book. The book was some kind of modern Harry Potter novels for soviet kids.Personally, I've read that book about 10 times when I was a kid.It's about a pioneer (communistic analogue of boyscout) who finds a genie bottle in 1930's.Boy calls the genie "starik Khottabych", it's hard to translate this name, because russian "starik" literally means "old man" in English but starik has another sense, while Khottabych is a usual for russians and ukrainians second name, which means "son of Khottab".Overally the boy thinks of genie as an old baby and tries to learn how to use genie's abilities to help his friends, his favourite soccer team and so on.Pioneer don't bothers about money, his main concern is how to make Khottabych a true communist. This film may be influenced by Comrade Stalin himself, but it doesn't mean nothing today.It's moral is looking naive for modern kids in ex-USSR, they prefer to watch meaningless Pokemon cartoons.Still, if you want to know something about such an unique thing as Soviet Fantasy, this movie is one of the few examples of it.

Vampire looking for payback

Vampire's Grave is the second of two films concerning the character that German Robles played in the first film. The film is from Mexico and apparently it has a certain cult status that has thoroughly escaped me.

This is the kind of film that Universal Pictures used to do so well and I suspect had it been done there where they mastered the art of Gothic horror, it would rate a lot better from me. German Robles is no Bela Lugosi, he's not Christopher Lee either.

This vampire is dead and buried in his grave with stake plunged through his heart when some scientist decides to steal the body for experimentation. Pull out the stake and you've got troubles as Robles remembers all the people who did him in in the previous life and film. He's out for a little payback.

Universal did these so much better.

Watch it!

Historically ,this is the first in the series of swashbucklers in which Jean Marais starred from the late fifties to 1962.And this is not the best,because of a desultory script which does not really grab the audience .The first part looks like a poor man's "Fanfan La Tulipe" which also took place during king Louis the Fifteenth's reign .The anti-war spirit (reflected in the performance on stage)may remind you of some of Henri Jeanson's lines ,but it's a pale imitation.the second part can be looked upon as a blueprint for "Le Bossu" ,the following year,La Tour and Lagardère being interchangeable heroes : the dashing fair knight goes to the rescue of a damsel in distress ,deprived of her inheritance.Filmed on scope ,which was still rather luxury in the French cinema ,the director makes the best of it at the beginning in the war scenes ,then for the last scenes with the deported women prisoners en route to La Rochelle .

Miscast Actors unable to salvage witless farce

In the 1950s Rank,along with other film producers,were trying to find ways to attract audiences back to the cinema.Having fallen out with Fox over Cinemascope,Rank turned to the short lived Vistavision,to add to Technicolour to attract customers.The fact that this could not disguise the poverty of the script didn't escape them and the film was shelved for 2 years.The best scenes are those at the beginning featuring Carmichael,Harrison and Hayter.After that the film is on a downward spiral.Nearly every actor with a major part is miscast.Carmichael is clearly unsuited to the part.For some reason his hair is made up with a teddyboys quiff.The part would more suit someone like Brian Rix.Diana Dors would certainly have made more of the part than Belinda Lee.Alas Robert Helpmann is just awful as the chief of the gang and would have been better played by Sid James.The climax in the hotel is about as unfunny as you can get.No wonder Carmichael didn't want to discuss it.At a time when he was a rising star of cinema this film could have put him back years.

Most synopses of this film are incorrect

Most reviewers of this Mexican horror-comedy tend to get their facts wrong. Despite what almost every synopsis of this film claims, the story is NOT about "a couple having car trouble who are forced to spend the night in a spooky castle."

Here's the real story: Mexican funny-man, El Clavillazo (ANTONIO ESPINO), is in love with a seamstress named Beatriz (EVANGELINA ELIZONDO), and also hangs out with a variety of odd characters, including a newsboy and a mental patient. Meanwhile, at a nearby castle, a mad scientist named "Dr Sputnik" and his scarred, hunchbacked assistant are busy making monsters. The doctor poses as a blind man in town but uses hypnosis to lure Beatriz to his castle and makes her believe that she is his own love named "Galatea". El Clavillazo, with an assist from his friends, blunders his way into the castle, where he spends most of his time being chased around by various monsters. There is the Frankenstein-like butler, GERMÁN ROBLES (star of several serious horror films) as a vampire, a werewolf, a mummy, and a gill man (clearly patterned after "Creature from the Black Lagoon"). There is also another, unidentified monster being kept in a cell, which is referred to as a "gorilla" in some reviews, although it appears to be more of a Neanderthal-like creature, perhaps based on Mr. Hyde. The usual mix of horror and hi-jinx ensues.

Like a summer rain

A love story in Spain. Delicate, silky and dramatic. A young girl in a strange world, a man out of law, a aunt who hopes in the transformation of past. Adventure and a dead body - innocent victim of a fight in which she has not place. A different Bardot and a brilliant Alida Vali. At the end,only the subtle wall , with romantic sketches. It is not a good or bad film. It is ordinary description of pieces of dream, shadows of reality, small things and childish desires. Nothing complicate and this is cause of the emotion at the movie's end. A feeling as a summer rain, warm and nostalgic, spiderweb in wind, the taste of evening and the silhouette of a Madame Bovary closed in everybody.

Miscast Actors unable to salvage witless farce

In the 1950s Rank,along with other film producers,were trying to find ways to attract audiences back to the cinema.Having fallen out with Fox over Cinemascope,Rank turned to the short lived Vistavision,to add to Technicolour to attract customers.The fact that this could not disguise the poverty of the script didn't escape them and the film was shelved for 2 years.The best scenes are those at the beginning featuring Carmichael,Harrison and Hayter.After that the film is on a downward spiral.Nearly every actor with a major part is miscast.Carmichael is clearly unsuited to the part.For some reason his hair is made up with a teddyboys quiff.The part would more suit someone like Brian Rix.Diana Dors would certainly have made more of the part than Belinda Lee.Alas Robert Helpmann is just awful as the chief of the gang and would have been better played by Sid James.The climax in the hotel is about as unfunny as you can get.No wonder Carmichael didn't want to discuss it.At a time when he was a rising star of cinema this film could have put him back years.
