Living in Kentucky prior to the Civil War, Amantha Starr is a privileged young woman. Her widower father, a wealthy plantation owner, dotes on her and he sends her to the best schools. When he dies suddenly however, Amantha's world is turned upside down. She learns that her father had been living on borrowed money and that her mother was actually a slave and her father's mistress. The plantation is to be sold to pay off her father's debts and as the daughter of slave, Amantha is also to be sold as property. She is bought by a Louisiana plantation owner, Hamish Bond and over time she grows to love him until she learns he was a slave-trader. She tries again to become part of white society but realizes that her future lies elsewhere.

Great popcorn flick!

I don't know how many times I've seen this movie--I've lost count. It's not a classic like Gone with the Wind, but it's got that kind of "soapy" feel--like Imitation of Life, Madame Bovary, or Madame X. What is enjoyable about the film is the fact that it tries like hell to be politically correct in some areas (e.g. Sidney Poitier prancing about as if he were Hamish Bond's son, yet he has this love-hate relationship with him), but doesn't bother to be politically correct in others, with slaves singing happily (why do slaves always sing in these stupid movies?) & Dolly (like Prissy from GWTW). It's obvious that the beginnings of the Civil Rights movement impacted this film to a degree. Sydney's character has so much attitude that there's no way he would have really survived in those days, but who cares? He's definitely sexy in this movie.

Still, with all of its faults, it's an enjoyable movie--just don't take any of it too seriously or as a piece of history in any way. It's just great to see up & coming Sydney the actor with the Clark Gable the legend playing a character similar to Rhett Butler, and for the last time. Yvonne's great, too (who knew she would eventually become Lily Munster?) and the rest of the movie is well-cast. I like the scene when Hamish's old sea buddy comes by, gets drunk, and while the wind & rain is swirling about him he holds up his finger and says "I think there's a wee breeze..." or something to that effect. Clark is just looking at him, smiling, and I just crack up over that part.

Review :

No Dissonance

This film deserves to be on anyone's list of top films. My problem is that it is so perfect, so seamlessly polished, it is hard to appreciate the individual excellences.

The acting is top notch. I believe that monologue acting is quite a bit simpler than real reactive ensemble acting. Most of what we see today is monologues pretending to be conversations. But in this film, we have utter mastery of throwing emotions. Once the air becomes filled with human essence, it is hard to not get soaked ourselves as the camera moves through the thick atmosphere. Yes, there are slight differences in how each actor projects (Fonda internally, Balsam completely on his skin...) but the ensemble presents one vision to the audience.

The writing is snappy too. You can tell it was worked and worked and worried, going through several generations. It is easy to be mesmerized by this writing and acting, and miss the rare accomplishment of the camera-work. This camera is so fluid, you forget you are in one room. It moves from being a human observer, to being omniscient, to being a target. It is smart enough to seldom center on the element of most importance, so expands the field to all men.

This is very hard. Very hard, to make the camera human. So much easier to do what we see today -- acknowledge the machinery and jigger with it. Do we have a filmmaker today who could do this?

Anastasia

Bergman is charming as an amnesiac young woman who is recruited by Brynner to impersonate the daughter of the late czar. Bergman won her second Oscar for her portrayal. Brynner is good as the exiled Russian who tries to bring her back into a world she once may have known and Hayes is stand out as the grand dutchess who strives to find the truth behind this girls' credentials. Crisp direction from Anatole Litvak and a lively supporting cast of Akim Tamiroff make this a simply ravishing film.

Review :

Never give a sucker an even break

This was a nice film with drama, music, romance and a message made by and starring Raj Kapoor at his peak. He again demonstrated his love of the visual Charlie Chaplin, along with facial similarities his politics were probably not too far removed either.

Jaunty orphan Ranbir Raj makes his way to Bombay to make his fortune, after encountering much human trickery ends up poor in money but rich in love. Reflecting the ups and downs are many good Jaikishan songs, especially Mera Joota Hai Japani and the relentless bouncy Ichak Dana Bichak Dana both sung by Mukesh. Nargis seldom looked lovelier, either when singing in the rain, or in the key emotional scene watching her ghostly version singing her true feelings to Raj. He took to a tuxedo much better than Chaplin did too! The sets were all (RK) studio bound, but were atmospherically displayed in the gleaming black and white.

Overall nothing too heavy but not totally inconsequential either, a perfect example of early Bollywood.

Joe Cardos, a death row inmate in some unidentified country, is to face the gallows in the morning for strangling three women. Filled with bitterness at the world, and perhaps himself, Joe lashes out at the warden and guards' attempts at making his final hours a little easier, and refuses to see either his sister or the prison chaplain. However, Joe does change his mind about being granted a last request, one the prison is obligated by law to fulfill: He asks for a woman's company so he can have some "fun" in the time that's left. After asking around, two police detectives show up at the prison with a down-on-her-luck former "waitress" named Dora, who earlier that night had tried to drown herself. Dora, totally broke and feeling she has nothing to lose, has agreed to spend the night with Joe in his cell. As she sees it, the money she's being offered should be enough for "a decent funeral."

Tawdry Tabloid Tale, Tenderly Told

John Agar himself has said (in an online chat hosted by Turner Classic Movies) that this was a "very strange" movie. Strange yes, but also intriguing in a low-budget sort of way.

Of course, the film is a retread of the old hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold romantic fantasy. (A much more recent example: "Leaving Las Vegas.") The Cleo Moore character, who agrees to spend the night with Agar, isn't actually identified as a prostitute, but we get the idea. We also know that the more time these two tormented souls spend together, the more they will get to know each other, and themselves, with a generous helping of psychobabble along the way.

But once you get past the obviousness of the film's rather incredible premise, not to mention a mawkish opening theme song, things get interesting in this modest, offbeat Hugo Haas opus. Moore and Agar deliver performances that are sincere, if at times a bit theatrical - he plays a condemned man who's mad at the whole world; she plays a suicidal woman who, despite her despair, is still capable of hope. Some of Moore and Agar's scenes together are nicely played out in long, continuous takes.

Unfortunately, the movie is nearly ruined by a frustrating, unresolved ending. Haas may have been trying for some kind of dramatically suspended moment, but it makes you want to yell at him: Tell us what happens next!!!

Beautiful cinema about adolescence

A bit slow (somehow like a Sofia Coppola movie) but still a very captivating film about the discovery of sexuality by three teenage girls. The magic of the movie lies in its capacity to bring back many memories to how it felt like to be their age. The confusion and the insecurities are portrayed in a very simple way but so true to life. The music is perfect and the acting is amazing. The camera works beautifully also. I highly recommend it for those who are not afraid to look back at this particular period of life when we discover our sexual impulses and our desires. I would also say that it is a fine film for young people going through that period. So many movies have been made about adolescence but this really captures the true essence of discovering the adult world of romance and its complexities.
