Truly classical Czech movie

This movie (and its sequel) is a best adaptation of the classical Czech book The Good Soldier Svejk to date. True to the book with the best Czech actors this adaptation just can't be bested. Story follows the mishaps of the simpleminded soldier Svejk in the beginning of the 1st World War and points out the stupidity of the government and army. True movie gem.

I had hope. Oh well

I saw this film in the video shop yesterday and decided to give it a try. When I saw what ratings this film got here, I was sort of put off but at the same, I had high hopes that this might succeed in me giving it at least a 6.

That's not the case in this film and I tell you why in pointers.

First off like the film Seed, I don't know about you guys but I found Seed to be some sort of Michael Myers rip-off. Here I have the same minor problem. At first the Leonard Karl Character is quite awesome but as we see what goes behind doors, in his house, he is more portrayed as a Leatherface character. I don't know if that's what you guys think but that's what I think. Yes, we get a cool looking killer but it treaded on when a poor writing director tries to use someone else's character to rip theirs off. The director ruined his killer which sucks (in that sense). Overally I found the Killer enjoyable to watch in action. One thing with Karl I found the director pulled off well was the amount of screen time Karl was on for. He was on at the right moments and he was paced on the screen well, not revealing too much till the end.

From start to finish, we get crappy un-developed characters that we really don't care about, and we just want them to die or live either way. I had high hopes that eventually we would come to like these characters. oh well.

the music is OK.

The acting is bad. Not much else to say about how bad it is.

The kills are average at best. They were timed right (being honest). I never had a problem with them.

The story also could have been more awesome and conclusive if we didn't have such poor actors, scenes and scares. There was nothing about this film that was scary and as for the script, it feels as if it's poorly written and when every scene comes around the corner, it just goes no where.

A really poor film. 4.9/10

Beautiful and inspiring

Shirley Jones is very believable as Julie Jordan, the lovely and ever patient mill worker who falls for a carousel barker, Billy Bigelow. With such heart felt ballads as "If I Loved You" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" it definitely ranks as one of the essential Hollywood musicals. Carousel is just about the only musical made during this period that deals with darker themes (i.e. date rape, domestic abuse). One could say that it even argues in favor of birth control. Carousel will never look dated because its themes are timeless and apply to the human spirit no matter what year it is. Everybody can identify with Billy to a degree and everybody can not help but feel a deep respect for Julie by the end of her personal journey. Fans of musical drama will treasure Carousel for years to come.

In The Red

Suspense thriller? There was not a jot of suspense all through, I was more interested in the film's ending not because the twist would be revealed in the last reel but because it would mean the end of the 1 hour 45 minutes discomfiture. Even Himesh Reshammiya's great music couldn't make it better. Aftab's acting was good but Celina does not even know the ABC of acting all she knows is how to show off her body. In most of the scenes there is definitely something that has a red colour e.g. Aftab's red shirt, Amrita's red top, Celina's red dress and red light in the night club that is an OK idea because it kept on reminding you of the title but when the whole screen goes red before the next scene that was far to annoying. The story was good but it was far too slow although it's nearly 2 hours it seems like a 3-hour movie. The ending was quite clever but what is the use of watching a film for its ending?

1983, meets 1986, meets 2006. Welcome, Copy-Paste!

Bear with me a little, and you'll understand the following. Just read the rest, please.

Bille August, of Indiana Jones' fame, wrote and directed one of the Big Epics of Nordic cinema in 1986, Pelle Erobreren. Max Von Sydow and Pelle Hvenegaard played the roles we (almost) see here played by Rolf Becker (Helge) and Leonard Proxauf (Jonas) yet, still a far cry from the original.

Around 1983, Ingmar Bergman spent more than 100 days of non-stop work shooting Fanny och Alexander, arguably the best film ever made. There, we meet the Ekhdals and, in particular, Alexander, who faces the trial and physical punishment for his sins by a priest (by then, his stepfather), memorably played by Jan Malmsjö in a scene copied exactly, even the words (here in German rather than the original Swedish) for NimmerMeer.

A young and sweet Troels Asmussen, in August's film (Pelle), plays a rejected child that wants to leave "home" with the troupè that tours the village, who deeply resembles Tom Lass' character (Knut).

NimmerMeer is very well done. Beautifully shot. Illumination and camera work are outstanding, but the script follows so closely two other very well known films, that even the names of people refer to them. It's much more Swedish or Danish in looks than German (wardrobes, actors, sets). And this is not just because all the names used on the film are either Norwegian or Swedish!

Some scenes use the exact camera angles, wardrobes AND text used on the original films, so I couldn't call these "details" a homage to August and Bergman.

The relationship with The Death and dreams is a theme Alexander deals with in Bergman's story as Jonas does here almost with the same visual references and in the same "acts" as in Fanny och Alexander.

All in all, if this film is to be regarded as something original, it is not. If it was made to show how good a thing could be done as a beautiful project, it succeeded, but I'd recommend Toke Hebbeln (the Director) to credit the writers who gave life to his characters before.

Toke directed a short when he was 24. It is a beautiful, rare and strong film that has life of its own. Here, on his feature-length debut I find something extremely rare in modern cinema: using others scripts and not telling the audience they're about to see some scenes of two films intertwined in a way you can think it's something original.

A good political entertainer

The story revolves around a father son duo . Father being a position greedy politician while the son working tirelessly for the welfare of the people . Director Joshi is well know for churning out good family entertainers. This being one of them . Somewhere in the middle we feel that the story sags a bit . Songs find entry at unnecessary junctures. But the director does well in bringing out the father son competition in the best possible way. Even further the comedy and punch dialoges are quite well timed. On the whole a good suggestion for malayalies who wish to watch a entertainer with the whole family .The lead roles were done justice by dileep and kavya but the support cast could have been better.

Wartime sentiment, astonishingly based on a true account...

In 1949 Occupied Japan, an American Army Sergeant who despises the locals ultimately finds a soft spot in his heart while working with the nuns and children at a bedraggled orphanage, soon falling in love with a Japanese translator. Although this story is based upon fact, with the real-life protagonist Sgt. Hugh O'Reilly acting as technical adviser, one hesitates to swallow such a big lump of sugar. The film has been designed as a heart-warmer yet, as bullet-chested, no-nonsense Aldo Ray plays O'Reilly, the character's complete transformation into an old softy is rather too good to be true. Ray, who got stuck in a revolving door of battle films during this period, isn't an animated actor on-screen, his personality mostly consisting of a stoic manliness; here, he strains to utilize his goofy laugh and dumb-mug smile to convince us he's just a big kid on the playground--one with love in his eyes. Ray's a decent actor, but this part would be a stretch for even the most accomplished performer. Buddy Dick York gets some second-banana laughs, Phil Carey is a by-the-books Colonel whose heart eventually thaws, while the sisters and little ones are constantly around to milk the audience for the utmost treacly effect. A little nonsense now and then, is cherished by the wisest men.

This is one of Cantinflas' movies with the most heart. Cantinflas' exchange with children reveals as much about his comic genius as it does his underlying humanitarian attributes. It is easy to see with this movie why Cantinflas is considered the quintessential Mexican "tramp"... because in all he does, with all his faults, and despite the joking around, he still has a conscious. This movie will make you bust a gut (like my father usually does when he sees it), as well as leave you all warm and fuzzy inside. If you like this movie as much as I do, you will also enjoy El Bombero Atomico.

overlooked,dark musical

Just to add to the previous comments who all noted how good this bittersweet mature musical is- I think it just missed being a classic , in spite of all of its fine attributes, because its score is on the ordinary side. That said-Gene Kelly's rollerskate number is as good as his famed soggy solo in Singing in the Rain-it is absolutely breathtaking. And the 3 friends dance with garbage cans on their feet is great. The most surprising is the heartbreaking solo of Dan Dailey. What a performance! He is supposed to be a self loathing ad exec who proceeds to get very drunk at a party and even dances with a cliched lampshade on his head. He never loses his dignity, as he dances with grace and agility ,all the while , convicing us that he's quite drunk. One thing I noticed in the plot. The old war buddies can only bond again after a huge brawl in which they relive their war days and beat up the gangsters. Then they can drink together and let their sensitive sides show and sing about old friendships. At the movies end, Dan Dailey is able to reunite with his unseen wife. He phones her and tells her that he loves her. Kelly is able to go off with Cyd Charisse and Michael Kidd goes back to the "sticks" and his big Italian family and his hamburger joint. The movie ends on a bittersweet note-the three pals go their separate ways. We don't hear them make any plans to meet again.Yet, we don't feel they need to-they still don't have anything in common in the real world. However, in the magical musical world they took from each other what they needed and are now able to accept their somewhat disapointing yet very human realities. They each have grown up and have found more mature relationships with their wives and with themselves. The movie's title is ironic- It isn't always fair weather and real life can be disappointing but we can still find contentment.

The Andrews Mission

In the wake of his burst of popularity after becoming that iconic figure for Fifties kids Davy Crockett, Fess Parker starred in The Great Locomotive Chase. The film is based on a true incident from the Civil War involving an espionage mission where several Union soldiers are sent under the leadership of a civilian who knows the territory. The idea is to seize a train and destroy as much railroad equipment and track between Marietta, Georgia and Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The fact that Fess Parker as John J. Andrews is a civilian is cause for much dissension in the ranks of these soldiers who are not used to operating with stealth tactics. One of them, Jeff York, is obstreperous to the point of mutiny.

Although Parker is the star, depending on your point of view the real hero is Jeffrey Hunter who is the conductor of the train Parker and his men steal. Hunter is courageous, cunning, and resourceful and every bit a match for Parker and his tricks.

From back in the day I remember that the Disney Studio was marketing toy trains based on the locomotives used in this film. No amount of begging could get my parents to part with any money for one of those. But somewhere some folks around my age have those models and I daresay they're worth a fortune.

The Great Locomotive Chase is a fine well constructed film that is as fresh today as when I saw it in theaters way back when. A must for any Civil War film festival.

Charming little film

I will be honest, I wanted to watch this film because, and just because, it is made by Jerry Hopper, a director I saw almost all movies. Crime, westerns, adventure ones, and very efficiently done. Always. I knew this feature was a comedy, and I usually avoid comedies. But the Universal Studios comedies are not so dull. I watched some of them directed by Jack Sher, Harry Keller, very rare, never released in France, and I admit it is always a pleasure to discover such little gems.

This one, about a young boy who wants to talk, intrude himself in adult affairs, is delicious. And the gorgeous Maureen O Hara, one of the few remaining female Hollywood movie stars still alive - with Laureen Bacall and Olivia De Havilland - is always worth seeing. I won't never be tired of her. Universal Studios is one of my all favourites, because it offered us pretty good pieces of work, as well in horror, scifi, crime, westerns, adventure films. And these were never boring or corny films. And often grade B pictures, but fancy B pictures. This comedy movie is also somewhere a B movie, pure Universal product, so charming and entertaining.

I don't regret it, even if I don't usually like comedies.

Movie had good action but the ending was poor.

Despite the fact that it was easy to predict how the movie would end after about twenty minutes, it was a decent Western. Howard Duff did a good job as Blackjack Ketchum. The movie did a good job in showing Blackjack not only as a man with a fast gun, but someone with intelligence. Other than the predictable plot, the other weak part of the movie was the end. Although Jared Tetlow was portrayed as a man who let others do his dirty work for him, it made no sense not to have Blackjack and Tetlow square off at the end. I guess the audience was suppose to forget Blackjack killed Tetlow's brother at the beginning of the movie.
