An effective Republic yarn.
I just discovered it. A very well made story, surprising for this kind of B movie. A policeman's bride is implicated in a hit and run accident. Both her and the police officer - Scott Brady - have to face blackmailers. One bystander who witnessed the accident, and the garage owner to whom she went to repair her car. The owner tries to abuse her for his silence, about the accident to report to the police. She refuses. And, the owner, who has very serious problems with his wife, has a terrible quarrel with her and she kills him. The police force investigates about this strange death and, of course, the poor officer's wife, who had the accident, is suspected because the police found some traces of the hit and run accident on the very place where the garage owner found death, crashed by a car he was repairing. Killed by his own wife...
So the police officer and his fiancée will have to prove the young woman' innocence, while the owner's wife - or may I say widow - tries to blackmail her husband - dead husband - associates. Hoods with whom he made some outlaw activities.
So, it's a movie with some stories mixed one with another, stories of blackmailing within blackmailing. Interesting at the most.
I won't tell you longer about this film, but it's really worthwhile.

It's okay...mainly for die-hard Lucy/Desi fans
First of all, I am a big I Love Lucy fan. I own this movie as part of the three movie DVD set (Forever Darling; Long Long Trailer; Too Many Girls). This is the least enjoyable of the three.
Even being a big Lucy/Desi fan, I didn't find much to enjoy about this movie. Even the funny scenes weren't funny. This is a pretty boring movie. It's kind of like a long, unfunny I Love Lucy episode in color. And when the two main characters fight, you can't help but think of how Lucy and Desi fought in real life.
I will say that the camping scenes looked so beautiful that it made me want to take my husband up on his standing offer to go camping together.

The movie itself is the least interesting part!
Sure, I like those movies from the 50's showing teenagers and hot rods and soda shops with jukeboxes and kids dancing and all that. This movie has those things. Unfortunately the story itself is not as interesting as a lot of the peripheral stuff.
First, and this happens in a lot of these old movies, the 'teenager' hasn't seen his teen years in a lo-o-n-g time. The "kid" who plays the lead was already 26 or 27 when this movie came out. He may have crash-dieted his way down to teenager-skinny but there's no hiding that the face and voice just aren't in high-schooler territory. For that matter the other 'kid' - the antagonist - also seems to have left his teen years behind too.
I would like very much to get my hands on a hot-rod the likes of which the main character stole to race in, while allegedly taking it for a test drive. Something like $600 for a built up 50's hot rod? I'll take five. Put 'em on my VISA card, thanks.
The 'kid's' father seemed very hard to please. The kid wants to get a job and earn the money to buy his own car and that idea is met with complete rejection by ol' pops. How many people wish their kids were willing to work and earn the things they want to have? What I thought was the most blatantly funny part happens when the main character and his arch enemy 'the other kid' go up against each other at a drag strip. For one thing, the other kid is swerving all over the track at our 'hero', a move guaranteed to get you disqualified if not arrested at any drag strip anyplace. But the real laugh comes in with the fact that it takes these two speed demons in hot rods approximately 50 seconds to run the quarter mile. I could do that myself without a car! Even back then, a car could do a 1/4 mile in 16 or 17 seconds, and that hasn't been lightning fast for many years now. A 50 second quarter mile works out to about 18 miles per hour, an hilariously long time. You'd think they were driving to Cleveland, the race goes on so long.
Well it's an interesting period piece. Must have been lots of fun making these movies and making a living off them back in the 50's. However they aren't much to brag on. If you can see this one for free, go for it, but it you're thinking of buying it, do your best to buy it cheap.

Review :
A great book, a great movie, and a perfect casting.
I first saw the film, and found it quite good. The story was catching, and the actors were splendid. As far as Bogart is concerned, I rank this movie with "the Caine Mutiny", and above "African Queen". Lee J. Cobb I found quite good too, and much more credible than Curd Juergens in "the Inn of sixth happiness". The rest of the cast gives, I think, a quite good idea of the missionary life in China. Which was the weak part in the otherwise good "Sand Pebbles". I read the book at least once a year. It explains more of the movie plot, and I recommend to anyone interested in the ethics of the film, but it should have been too long, if strictly respected in the screenplay. I'd rate the movie 9,5/10, admitting, though, that Bogart is one of my favorite actors, which could biase my judgment !

A Decent Comedy
Ronald Cheng plays Scott Chung, a successful designer who all of a sudden is told he may have a son, Wayne. Wayne is about five years old and comes to live with him while a DNA test is done to prove or disprove paternity (Wayne's mom is deceased). The title of this film refers to Scott's ability to solve any problem in 3 minutes. This one proves more daunting. Wayne is mostly a quiet kid and Scott begins to get fatherly feelings. Of course, you're wondering whether Scott is the father and you know you're not getting the answer till late in the film. This is pretty much run of the mill stuff but it has its nice moments as well as a few silly ones. Wayne was raised after his mom by his aunt and you want to see whether Scott and the aunt become closer. The film is okay, with mostly actors I haven't seen before in film, and they are fine. Its kind of a "chick flick" and it works in that context. Not a bad date movie. So, I recommend marginally, but you won't dislike it.

Neither Maurice Leblanc,nor Jacques Becker.
Jacques Becker 's talent was slowly but inexorably declining at the time:the precedent movie "Ali -Baba' was his biggest failure,and only his last movie,"le trou" returned him to former glories.
Maurice Leblanc's afficionados will be disappointed:this is an original screenplay,borrowing some elements from the short stories of "Arsène Lupin gentleman cambrioleur" (the lighter aspect of the writer)and incorporating some of "813" (but without the suspense and the diabolic atmosphere of this very long novel in which Lupin is completely defeated).But it's finally unambitious and uninteresting.It avoids the strong anti-German feel which we can find in the books though.Time had passed.
Robert Lamoureux is not Arsène Lupin at all;Edouard Molinaro will cast Jean-Claude Brialy as the famous hero with better results in his "Arsène Lupin contre Arsène Lupin" (1962),but nothing extraordinary.
We are still waiting for the director who will do Maurice Leblanc justice.

Vijay lives a poor lifestyle in the Southern part of India. As he is unable to secure any job for his livelihood he takes to petty crime such as picking peoples pockets and theft. As a result of this he becomes known to the police, who instead of arresting him ask him to go underground and seek out some criminal elements. Vijay does so, only to find out that he has been tricked by the police and ends up hating them. Word of this gets out and a gangster named Teja asks Vijay to join him, which Vijay accepts. Then when Teja finds out that Vijay is not a police informer nor a gangster of repute but a mere pick-pocket, he sends one of his men to inquire about him, and to their surprise they find out that he working undercover for the police. His men abduct Munni, Vijay's sweetheart and hold her captive. The question remains is Vijay really an agent of the police; a gang leader; or merely a pick-pocket.

I couldn't watch this movie without cringing at the lead girl. She really was hard to watch. I felt like it was like playing dress up for her.
This was apparently 1926 and I couldn't tell how old she was or what. She walked like Paris Hilton, Not Greta Garbo. She didn't seem to know anything about how an upperclass girl acted in 26. Also, did she have an accent? did she not? I really hope I don't see any more of this idiot.
The lead actor though wasn't too bad. I felt like he really carried the movie for me.
It was an OK movie over all. I won't watch it again. I can't bear the audacious acting.

bittersweet and timeless
It's the old story of the holdouts against the developers a la Milagro Beanfield, *bnót Braun*, and a million other stories. This time it's played out on a Galilee kibbutz that unbeknownst to a dozen or so of its founders, who reside on the premises in a special seniors' complex, the mired-in-debt community has gone into receivership.
The oldsters awaken one morning to an empty (save a cow and one Chinese laborer) kibbutz and after being offered millions by a corrupt tycoon and refusing his offer, hunker down to recreate their society on their own terms.
Simply told and ably acted, the characters draw us into their world, their decades-old unsettled scores, and their up-to-now unconfessed romances. It's a sweet, sad, timeless tale with a kibbutz twist yet no surprises. Recommended.

Ordinary film portrait of an extraordinary man
Although Cornel Wilde gets top billing as an American double agent, the true star of this film is Major John Andre (Michael Wilding), the British officer who was captured as a spy and hanged for his plot with Benedict Arnold to betray West Point. Unfortunately the acting is wooden by almost everyone, so a good story and some interesting moral dilemmas are hard to hit home.
My one and only favorite American Revolution film is John Ford's classic "Drums Along the Mohawk" (1939). "The Crossing" (2000) runs a distant second. Most of the rest, like "The Devil's Disciple" (1959), "The Howards of Virginia" (1940), and "John Paul Jones" (1959) are merely OK and some, like The Patriot" (2000) and "Revolution" (1985) are just plain silly. The Disney "Ben and Me" (1953) is entertaining and historically accurate (forgetting the mouse). The TV mini-series "The Adams Chronicles" (1976). "The Revolution" (2006), and "John Adams" (2008) are probably one of the best sources about the period. If you like Pre Revolution 18th Century American history, Michael Mann's breath-taking "Last of the Mohicans" (1992) is a great film from this period, as is King Vidor's "Northwest Passage" (1940).

A great film of an American hero
Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels reprise their television roles in this western classic that has the Lone Ranger and Tonto defusing a war between ranchers and Indians. A a greedy cattle baron wants to seize a silver-rich mountain on an Indian reservation and devises plans to have the Indians relocated or exterminated to achieve his ends. The picture was filmed in beautiful color with excellent sound, and has a solid cast and a very good music score, including the signature William Tell Overture. There are several fine action scenes, daring rescues and the familiar disguises used by the Masked Man to close in on the killer of a young cowboy. The grand mountain vistas of southern Utah provide the backdrop for this film and the Ranger and Tonto never looked better as they ride the trail for justice and bring peace to a young territory hoping for statehood. Moore and Silverheels get great support from Lyle Bettger as the scheming rancher, Robert Wilke, John Pickard, Michael Ansara, Frank de Kova and Perry Lopez.

Is there something you want, Mr. Gannon?
Cunningly interesting Western from a director who had few peers in the genre. Much like other Anthony Mann pictures, The Far Country blends a potent pot boiling story with an adroit knowing of impacting scenery. Both of which play out amongst some of Mann's peccadilloes like honour, integrity, betrayal and of course, death!
The story sees fortune hunting partners Jeff Webster James Stewart and Ben Tatum Walter Brennan travel to Oregon Territory with a herd of cattle. Aware of the blossoming gold-boom, they plan to make a tidy profit selling the cattle in a Klondike town. Arriving in Skagway they find self-appointed judge Mr. Gannon John McIntire ready to meet out justice to Webster on account of Webster having fractured the law, all be it with honest cause, along the way. In punishment Gannon takes the partners herd from them, but they steal them back and head across the Canadian border to Dawson-with Gannon and his men in hot pursuit. Here beautiful women and a meek and lawless town will fill out the destinies of all involved.
Interesting from start to finish, The Far Country benefits greatly from James Stewart's bubbling anti hero in waiting portrayal and Mann's slick direction of the tight Borden Chase script. The cinematography from William H. Daniels is superlative, tho not done any favours by current DVD prints, and the film has a few surprises and a "will he wont he?" core reeling the viewers in. Paying dividends on re-watches for hardened genre fans, it still remains something of an essential viewing for first timers venturing into the wonderful, yet dark, Western world of Anthony Mann and James Stewart. 8/10

A story in two parts and two places. An extremely bad script
The excellent Israeli director Amos Gitai has used this time a script to provide a vehicle for great names like Juliette Biboche, Barbara Hendricks, Jeanne Moreau, but has little to do with any real situation. An Israeli policeman travels to Avignon to attend the funeral of his stepfather. He sleeps on the street amid the homeless but wears a suit for the funeral! His beautiful step sister Ana who has not seen her daughter since early childhood and has not kept any contact with her, discovers that the daughter lives in a settlement in Gaza. Quite strange, the late father of Ana did visit his granddaughter occasionally! Instantly Ana travels to Gaza, succeeds to penetrate the sealed-off territory from which religious settlers were to be evacuated and wanders amid these settlers until she founds her daughter. The film has some beautifully filmed moments depicting the confusion, religious frenzy of settlers and cold blood of the policemen involved, but otherwise is very close to the usually sold kitch.

Martin gets friendly with Lady Hawksley's secretary, Jean Larson, and learns that Blake is a neer-do-well nephew of Lady Hawksley. Murder also rears its ugly head as Martin finds clues that seem to indicate that everybody he encounters is involved in one way or another with stamp counterfeiting.

Tom Conway as "Duke" Martin
"Murder on Approval" aka "Barbados Quest" from 1955 is evidently the second film about this character, Tom "Duke" Martin, a private investigator. In this one, Martin is hired by an American who believes that while in England, he paid $10,000 for an overprint of a Barbados stamp which he believes is fake. He wants his money back.
Martin flies to London and meets up with his Barney Wilson (Mark Balfour). Soon the two are up to their necks in fraud, murder, and robbery.
"Murder on Approval" doesn't have much of a budget, and Tom Conway in is a familiar Falcon/Saint type role -- a smooth, elegant ladies' man who gets in the way of a police investigation. Nothing new there. The attractive Delphi Lawrence plays the secretary of a wealthy woman who inherited a Barbados stamp.
Michael Balfour adds a little spice to the proceedings.
It's slow-moving and not very exciting.
Just okay.
